Fernando Leon Family Reserve were once only enjoyed by Fernando Leon. The Fernando Leon Family Reserve was released in 2012 and pays homage to Fernando Leon, a major figure in the tobacco industry. This blend is believed to have been a private blend that the elder aficionado only shared with friends and family. Now, his son Guillermo is the current owner of La Aurora and has released it for others to enjoy in memory of his father. It is a throwback cigar with old world appearance and comforting flavors, making it the perfect tribute to such a respected tobacco statesman.

This cigar comes with a Dominican Corojo wrapper and binder and fillers from the Dominican, Peru and Brazil. It is available in five vitolas, including a vitola made exclusively for this smoke. They include Robusto (5 x 50), Corona FC (5 1/2 x 42), Corona (6 x 47), Gran Toro (6 x 58) and Belicoso (6 1/4 x 52). La Aurora is known for its wrappers, and this smoke continues the trend. It has a rustic appearance with some charming roughness to it and has a light brown, somewhat Colorado look to it. The band is Cubanesque and is red, white and gold. It features the stogies name in handwritten cursive, a beautiful touch. The prelight notes evoke hay, grass, spice, cedar and some lemon.

The first-third of the Fernando Leon Family Reserve starts off with the grass and lemon notes present on the prelight. The lemon flavor is more of a lemon peel than sour lemon taste, so it is perfectly subtle. There are also some mild coffee notes, giving the profile some body. The grass and citrus combine to produce a clean taste that finishes extremely well. Nearing the end of the first-third, some sweet spice appears and develops into a sugar cane taste.

During the second-third, the spices dull a little while a cedar note steps in and takes control of the smoke. Some reviewers also detected some wood and earth notes, as well. The grass and lemon peel flavors are still present, though they have moved into the background. The coffee fades out around the halfway mark, but the profile remains complex moving into the last third.

In the final third of the Fernando Leon Family Reserve, the flavors surge in power, producing a late burst that carries to the finish. The coffee notes return and fill out the background while the grass, lemon peel, wood and earth flavors constantly battle for the lead position. This results in a cigar that stays interesting flavor wise until the very end, which is smooth and clean tasting.

This line is medium bodied and medium in strength, and is ideal for nearly any setting. Owing to its superb wrapper, it burns and draws well, so it provides premium performance in addition to flavor. In all, it’s a premium cigar that a tobacco legend could be proud of.
