L Atelier Oirignal CigarsThe 2012 introduction of L Atelier Original Cigars was the first to come out of the company. L’Atelier Imports, French for “workshop,” is a fresh name in the industry despite its veteran owners. Pete Johnson, the man behind the popular Tatuaje brand, opted to start from the ground up and expand his talents further in the industry rather than build upon his existing Havana Cellars. Based in Miami, Florida, Johnson worked alongside fellow experts Dan Welsh, Sean “Jasper” Johnson and his own brother K.C. Johnson to produce the company’s inaugural line of L Atelier Original Cigars. It’s one of a kind ingredients and solid construction have lent a hand in its warm welcome into many humidors.

Unveiled at the annual IPCPR trade show in Orlando, this medium to full-bodied stogie is a visual tribute to the well-known Cohiba Behike BHK trio out of Cuba. It is constructed of a unique hybrid wrapper called Sancti Spiritusa, a mixture of Ecuadorian Criollo and Pelo de Oro. Spanish for “golden hair,” the latter is known for its strength and intense flavors. The rare combination provides a dark appearance and is the first of its kind in the industry. There is minimal tooth and oil present on the surface. The filler and binder are made up of Nicaraguan tobaccos and accentuate the carefully blended exterior. L Atelier Original Cigars are available in three distinct sizes, including the LAT52, LAT54, and LAT56. Smokers will find this line in boxes of 15 or in a 9 piece sampler with all three gauges to enjoy.

Looking closely at the LAT52, reviewers agreed it was a must-try stick. Prior to lighting up, the powerful scents are present for many. It smells of a forest with notes of wood and soil, and subtle hints of warm tea are noticeable as well. Upon cutting the pigtail cap the draw is considered smooth and easy by reviewers. Once ignited, the strength of flavors is immediate. In the first third the same initial flavors are said to come through while some reviewers detected hints of flowers and chocolate. As the burn progresses, it is even with a strong dark grey ash hanging on. In the middle portion of L Atelier Original Cigars, the floral, tea, and woody flavorings subside while unusual hints of fruit and beef are said to be detectable at times. The fruity sweetness is short lived while the taste of meat continues throughout the second third with a slight spicy pepper undertone. In the last third, smokers are greeted with a return of sweetness and subtle hints of pepper. The final draw on the stogie is described as fresh with an adequate amount of flavor to finish it off with.

Those lucky enough to acquire L Atelier Original Cigars agree that the journey through the smoke is unpredictable and satisfying with the fluctuations in flavor being smooth from start to finish. The structure of the stick is solid and burns evenly all the way through. It is described as a smoke that is appropriate at any time of day. This premium stogie has distinctive qualities yet has a price tag to suit both the occasional social smoker as well as the serious collector. Smoke shops and online retailers are the ideal means for picking up this new must have.
