Rocky Patel CigarsThe Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 is a premium cigar that is justly famed as a full-flavored extravaganza. It is interesting that even though the Patel website rates the 1992 as a mild to medium-bodied cigar, most cigar smokers rank it as a medium to full-bodied cigar. In an interesting aside, Vintage 1992 and 1990 are the two blends that propelled Rocky Patel to fame; as any long-time cigar devotee can tell you—his cigars are geared more toward the sophisticated palate.

These are complex cigars which feature an even balance of flavor, strength, and complexity. The Vintage 1992 line is available in Churchill, Juniors, Perfecto, Petite Corona, Robusto, Sixty, Toro, and Torpedo shapes.

The gorgeously presented Vintage 1992 Torpedo is a box-pressed cigar wrapped in a smooth and unmarred dark brown ten-year-old sun-grown Ecuadorian Sumatra seed wrapper with an oily sheen. The classic double burgundy and gold Rocky Patel bands engirdle this fine cigar which is filled with 7-year aged Dominican and Nicaraguan binder and filler tobaccos. The firmly packed tobaccos give the cigar a firm feel, but a pre-light draw is clear and true. A cursory sniff gives only the hint of the fine tobacco contained within.

After an easy light, the draw remains effortless and nicely balanced—indicative of well-rolled filler. The burn is usually excellent; the ash holds tight for at least 2”. Patrick A. of StogieGuys.com, writing of the Vintage 1992, declares that “If you can’t get an even burn, a firm ash, or an effortless draw, you’re doing something wrong (and you might want to consult our Tips).”

Oddly, though, despite the easy draw, each puff produced relatively small tufts of smoke which came off and clung to the cigar. The aroma is a nutty one that even non-cigar smokers find pleasant.

Immediately following the initial light, rich, earthy notes of oak and sweet almond make their presence known, along with the a tinge of the earthy undertones one would expect from a medium to full-bodied cigar with Nicaraguan filler and binder in a darkly-pigmented wrapper. The initial third of the Vintage 1992 is enlivened with marauding hints of sweet spiciness, but it is not until the second third of the smoke that this fine cigar comes into its own.

Here, the oak and almond flavors mature into nicely layered notes of creamy-textured, rich dark roasted coffee combined with the pepper and spice that one expects as a smoke blooms into taste-filled splendor into the final third. On inhaling, the Vintage 1992 tingles the tip of the tongue with spice, followed by creamy coffee flavor like a stimulating cup after a tasty meal. The Vintage 1992 flavor fest continues until the flavors mellow towards an earth-toned finish.

At a price of around $8.75 each, this is obviously no everyday cigar, at least for most aficionados. However, considering the Vintage 1992’s complexity, full-bodied flavors (that many believe far outmatch the Vintage 1990 line), and its aged smooth creaminess, it should definitely have a place in most rotations.
