The story behind the Quesada family's Tributo line is a sad one. The Quesada Tributo cigar line is to honor their loved ones whom have passed. The Quesada Tributo Manolin is named after the 5th generations grandfather and the father of Manuel Quesada who is the current President of MATASA, Manolin Quesada. Manolin was the first person to introduce the newest generation to tobacco. He was also a formidable man to their upbringing and success. The Tributo Manolin is offered in a 6 ½ inch x 60 ring gauge size.
The Quesada Tributo line is only the second line of cigars produced by MATASA to bear the family's name. The line was released at the annual ProCigar Festival in Santiago, Dominican Republic. There were about fifty attendees that were warranted the opportunity to try a sample of each of the ligeros that were used in the production of this cigar. After sampling each one, they were able to try the Tributo of their choice. A tearful introduction to the release was given at the Festival and rightly so, seeing whom these cigars were named after. The family wanted a cigar that was unlike any other they had ever released. Especially if they were going to brand this cigar with the distinguished name of Quesada Tributo Manolin. They went to Ecuador and learned how to cross pollinate tobacco to produce their one-of-a-kind wrapper. The end product is made of Habano 2000, Corojo, Habana Vuelta Arriba and Sumatra. This is the only wrapper of its kind to have ever been used in cigar making. Then they chose the best ligeros they could find to fill it. This was truly a labor of love for the family and a touching tribute we can all be a part of. They chose to have this line be a limited release and only produced 150,000 cigars.
The history is a rich one, starting back in the 1880's in Cuba. Then spanning to the Dominican Republic where they opened MATASA and the Quesada family established themselves a rightful place in the history of the cigar world. It has been a family business ever since. Now, they are in their 5th generation in the company. With the many ups and downs in the tobacco world, there is a lot to be said that five generations later, they are still involved. That, in and of itself, is a declaration to the pride and honor Manolin Quesada inspired not only in his children, but his grandchildren. They opened SAG Imports, which stands for Sobrinos de Antero Gonzalez/ Decendants of Antero Gonzalez, in Florida in 1993. This has given them a foothold in the United States market.
The Quesada Tributo Manolin is a very rich cigar. It would be best appreciated by a seasoned cigar smoker with a well trained palate. It has also been said that allowing this cigar some time in the humidor only makes it better. The dark wrapper has a pleasant sheen to it. It is slightly oily and feels very smooth. As with the other cigars in the Tributo line, this cigar is well packed and has no soft spots. The flavors are fairly consistent throughout the smoke. The primary flavors are almonds, cedar, cocoa, hickory and mesquite. There are hints of butter cream, caramel, cinnamon, ginger, molasses, and nutmeg. All of those combined make for a sweet combination on the palate. There is a bit of spiciness from the wrapper, but it is not overpowering. The draw was good, and the burn was even and slow. The ash was a salt and pepper color and it produced volumes of white smoke. The Quesada Tributo Manolin would be paired nicely with a rye, or a high proof bourbon.
