Oliva Serie V Melanio CigarsGilberto Oliva and his family’s cigar company created Oliva Serie V Melanio Cigars as a tribute to their ancestor Melanio who harvested tobacco in the 1800’s. Despite the numerous obstacles conquered, his knowledge and brand has been passed down through the generations. With the history and success of the company it comes as no surprise that yet another line-up has been well received. To follow up the acclaimed original Oliva Serie V the company constructed a fresh blend meant to showcase their premium tobaccos. From its structure to the flavoring, Oliva Serie V Melanio Cigars have been described as a smoke worthy of acquiring by the box.

During the late19th century Melanio began growing tobacco, yet soon faced the need to shut down his harvesting due to the War of Independence. While he continued to grow following the war, his son Hipolito took over in the 1920’s. Communist control barriers led him and his son Gilberto to begin brokering tobacco instead. It wasn’t until the 1960’s that Gilberto left the country in hopes of finding new land for harvesting their Cuban-seed leaves. Following attempts in countries such as Honduras and the Philippines he found their new home in Nicaragua. With Gilberto’s son as president the company is now headquartered in Miami and is Nicaragua’s second largest grower.

Unveiled at the 2012 IPCPR Trade Show, Oliva Serie V Melanio Cigars is a one of a kind collection, despite its original influence. Their highly aged tobaccos, mainly out of the Nicaraguan area of Jalapa, are hand rolled by trade experts. This blend of premium leaves make up the binder and filler while the dark brown wrapper is Ecuadorian Sumatra. It is available in five vitolas; the Robusto, Torpedo, Churchill, Petit Corona, and Figurado. It is box pressed and packed in boxes of 10 for $8-$14 each.

Reviews of this smoke have depicted a unique and satisfying experience. Right out of the box it is described as feeling natural and solid in the hand. The skin is said to be sleek and thick with minor veining. Oliva Serie V Melanio Cigars model two distinctive bands with the first being the well known red, brown, and gold Serie V band. The words “Gran Reserva Limitada” encircle it in gold. The second more petite band has a similar color palette to the first and displays “Melanio” with “Gran Reserva Limitada” directly underneath.

After a visual inspection and even cut, reviewers noted the pre-lit draw as woodsy and sweet with slight hints of spiciness. Once fired up the first third is said to instantly provide a light cedar flavor amid a punch of pepper and mocha espresso. The flavors complement each other as the draw proves to be ideal and the smoke is creamy and substantial. The second third is said to highlight a deep spiciness with undertones of mocha coffee, leather, sugary tobacco and fruitiness. Reviewers noted the pale grey ash continuing to hold firm. The final third of the smoke was intense and flavorful. The espresso and sweet tobacco are said to be at the forefront with slight hints of cocoa, fresh fruit, and timber. The journey was creamy and soft from start to finish.

With a target production volume of just 500,000 annually, true aficionados are sure to get their hands on a box or two for their own collections when they can. From its full bodied ingredients to the satisfying flavors of each puff, Oliva Serie V Melanio Cigars have succeeded in carrying on the family legacy while creating an industry footprint of its very own.
