Man O War Dark Aged Cigars Are Extreme Maduros!Introduced just this year (2013) at the IPCPR, International Premium Cigar and Pipe Retailers trade show, Man O War Dark Aged Cigars were an impressive and well received Maduro. Maduro, a Spanish word meaning “mature”, signifies that the leaves used in the creation of this stogie were allowed to fully ripen and develop into their full flavor potential. A blend of Nicaraguan and Brazilian tobaccos make for the robust flavor of this beautiful stick.

The primary characteristics of the Man O War Dark Aged Cigars wrapper are darkness and toothiness. The oils found in the wrapper contribute to the strength of its flavor. The appearance of this cigar can be attributed to the Brazilian Habano wrapper, which was highly primed. The priming process for premium tobacco allows the leaves at the top of the plant to receive more sun, and achieve maturation before being harvested. This usually results in a darker leaf color. Strong tobaccos are created through high priming. The Nicaraguan filler is the reason that this is considered full bodied.

The cold draw reveals sweetness and a hint of nuttiness. Since Maduros tend to undergo a longer and more intense fermentation, the natural sugars have a chance to be released. This results in the sweetness that has come to be representative of most Maduros. Reviewers found Man O War Dark Aged Cigars to be a medium to full strength smoke. The initial third is woody, and has a strong peppery tone. Near the end of the first third, the pepper begins to fade into the sweetness that the unlit draw introduced. During the second third, that sweetness starts to resemble caramel, while the wood flavor reveals itself to be likened to cedar. In the final stretch of the cigar a mild pepper mingles with a more leathery flavor giving it a strong, but mellow finish. Many reviewers were impressed by the smoke production of these stogies. They found the ash to be light grey and held tight, resulting in a cooler draw.

Man O War Dark Aged Cigars are graced with two bands.  A narrow band simply states that this is a Dark Aged Maduro. Then a larger, more elaborate one that is associated with the blend. This band features a gold Spartan helmet with a red plume. Theycome in three vitolas: Torpedo (6 ¼” x 52), Toro (6” x 54), and Robusto (5” x 52).

These sticks are some of the newest to be added to the Man O War portfolio. They join the original, the Armada, Puro Authentico, Ruination, and the Virtue. When introduced it was said that they would be unavailable online, but others from the brand that were exclusive to brick and mortar retailers were later sold by web retailers.

The Man O War Dark Aged Cigars are carefully aged after rolling in order to ensure that the flavors blend harmoniously. The blend was created by the company, AJ Fernandez, otherwise known in the non-English speaking world as Tabacalera Fernandez. Abdel J. Fernandez personally proportions these cigars in order to create this winning combination of tobacco and considers them his finest blend.
