La Gloria Cubana Reserva FiguradosFor most people in the cigar world, when you say the brand, La Gloria Cubana, they immediately think of it's master roller, Ernesto Perez-Carrillo. The La Gloria Cubana Reserva Figurados were a much anticipated release from Swedish Match/ General Cigar, made by El Credito. The La Gloria Cubana Reserva Figurados met and exceeded any and all expectations upon release. So it would come as no surprise at all that Cigar Aficionado magazine gave this a coveted 93 rating upon its release. It was also in the top ten cigars for 2005. That would make me consider these to be a must have in my humidor. These sticks are offered with two different types of wrappers, natural and maduro. Both wrappers are available for all sizes. The sizes include the Piramides Clasicas 7.25 inches x 56 ring gauge, Selectos de Lujos 7.25 x 54, Flechas Especiales 6.5 x 49, Regalias Perfectos 6.25 x 57 and Felicias 4.875 x 49.

The La Gloria Cubana cigar brand originated from the  El Credito Cigars brand. The brand has been around for over 130 years. Ernesto Perez-Carillo,Sr. founded the El Credito cigar company in 1948. He was a two term Senator in Cuba and a well respected man. Shortly after Castro gained control of Cuba, his family had their property and factory seized by the government. They fled to the shores of Miami, Florida in fear for their lives. There, he started over and re-opened his beloved El Credito in 1969. General Cigar/ Swedish Match purchased El Credito in 1999.

The La Gloria Cubana Reserva Figurados natural wrapper is a bit more mild than the maduro. The maduro is a bit spicy because of the wrapper. Whether you purchase the natural or maduro, each cigar was hand rolled by a level 7 cigar roller and was overseen by Ernesto Perez-Carrillo, Jr. himself. Each cigar is filled with Dominican and Nicaraguan long filler that was double and triple fermented and aged for four years. A cedar chest was created to allow the cigars to sit for 3 months. This helped aid in the rich taste of these cigars. There are only 1,000 boxes of each size made per year to insure the highest quality standard is used.

The natural wrapped La Gloria Cubana Reserva Figurados has a medium brown colored wrapper that has a very solid feel. There are no soft spots present. The draw is perfect, and the burn line is even to the end. The ash is a salt and pepper color and it gives off a good amount of smoke. There were no touch-ups needed. During the first third, there was a definite nutty taste present with hints of sweetness. In the second third, more of a woody flavor comes through with a mild spice in the background. In the final third, there is definitely more of a spice, but you can still taste the nutty and woody flavors. All together, it is a smooth and rich combination.

The maduro wrapped La Gloria Cubana Reserva Figurados has a dark chocolate wrapper. It is smooth to the touch, and a bit oily. It feels tightly packed. The draw starts out on the tighter side, but quickly loosens to a flawless draw. The burn is even and produces a lot of smoke. The ash is a white color and holds tight almost to the end of the smoke. The first flavor you get is a taste of freshly ground pepper. It then evens out and produces a cedar flavor. These flavors are rounded out by a nice meaty flavor towards the end of the smoke. This is such a rich and full flavored smoke that it would be best appreciated by a seasoned smoker.
