La Gloria Cubana ClassicIf you are looking for an authentic Cuban-like cigar, then you need to get your hands on a La Gloria Cubana Classic. In 1992, Cigar Aficionado gave it a 90 rating and it has been touted as one of the most sought after cigars in the world. It is produced in the Dominican Republic and considered one of the strongest cigars produced from that region. The La Gloria Cubana Classic cigars are offered in twenty-three sizes. The longest cigar is 9 inches x 49 ring gauge, the Crown Imperial. Their shortest cigar is the Glorias Petit size 4.3125 x 32. All sizes are offered in an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper for the natural, or a Connecticut Broadleaf for the maduro. It is also made with a fantastic blend of Dominican and Nicaraguan tobacco.

The history of the La Gloria Cubana Classic is a rich history. This brand is originally from El Credito Cigars, which was purchased by General Cigar/ Swedish Match in 1999. Both companies have a rich and long history in the cigar world. The brand itself has been around for more than 130 years. It was created in Cuba in 1885. After Fidel Castro took control of Cuba, the brand literally went dormant for several years. In 1948, Ernesto Perez-Carillo,Sr. founded the El Credito cigar company. He was a well-known man, had a beloved family, and was a two term Senator in Cuba. After Castro gained power, the Perez-Carillo family not only had their property seized by the government, but their factories as well. In fear for their lives, they fled to the shores of Miami, Florida. In 1969, he re-opened his beloved El Credito in Miami's Little Havana. El Credito had it's own ups and downs, but the La Gloria Cubana Classic seemed to be a brand that, no matter how many times it reinvented itself, it remained a much loved cigar.

Fast forward to present day, and General Cigar/ Swedish Match are the current owners of the brand. They themselves mark their 50-year anniversary this year. Their story starts back in Germany with Ferdinand Kullman. He was a wine merchant that immigrated to the U.S. in 1848. He changed his name to the English version, Cullman when he arrived in the U.S. He continued his wine business as well as expanding into the production and sales of cigars. His son and grandson continued the family's tobacco business. Joseph Cullman, Jr., Ferdinand's Grandson, is credited for the development of the Connecticut Shade tobacco from Cuban seed. Cullman Brothers purchased General Cigar in 1960. They went on to acquire other companies, as well as make some of the most popular cigars on the market. In 1999, General Cigar sold its cigar business to Swedish Match. That is the same year they purchased El Credito. In 2005, Swedish Match purchased General Cigar and continues to operate it as a separate operating unit. Throughout the changes, these cigars continue to be the top of their class.

Since the La Gloria Cubana Classic is offered in both the Natural and Maduro, let's take a look at both. The Natural has a solid feel to it. It feels tightly packed. The brown wrapper is veiny, but they are very small. The pre-light draw has flavors of tobacco and new leather. The draw itself is easy. The cigar has a very consistent flavor throughout, without much change. It has the same taste as the pre-light draw, of the tobacco and leather. There are hints of sweetness and some spice. The burn was even and required no touch-ups or relights. The ash was loose, but it never flowered and remained consistent. It also produced a fair amount of blue gray smoke. This is definitely one that as it spends more time in your humidor, it only gets better.

The Maduro would be considered a bit more full body than the Natural. The dark wrapper is a bit oily, but feels smooth and firm. The draw is good and the burn is even throughout the smoke. Like the Natural, this is not a complex cigar, and the flavors remain constant. It has flavors of sweet cocoa and rich tobacco. There are hints of pepper and spice. In the background there are notes of sweet chocolate and espresso. Overall, both of the La Gloria Cubana Classic cigars are excellent choices and could be enjoyed by anyone.
