Special does describe the Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial cigar. Some cigars are about a time: the early morning flush of a new dawn, the calm at dusk following the storm, or as Rudyard Kipling put it: “Thought in the early morning, solace in time of woes, Peace in the hush of the twilight, balm ere my eyelids close.”

Some cigars are about a place: the warm trade winds wafting across veranda; the loud din and crushed comfort of your favorite Pub. Some cigars are about events: JFK ordering his last Cuban cigars and putting them in humidors for storage before establishing the trade embargo “Counsellors cunning and silent -- comforters true and tried,” or the beaming smile on a proud papa’s face as he hands out those “It’s a Boy” cigars with the blue band. The Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial is about family. In this case the family is that of Don Jose ‘Pepin’ Garcia – El Rey de los Habanos (which means the King of Cuban Cigars – which happens to also be the name of his cigar factory in little Havana, Miami).

The Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial is a product of My Father Cigars which has its own family story. Garcia’s son Jaime, a talented blender in his own right, secretly went to work in Nicaragua on a new cigar blend, which he intended to hide from his father. The elder Garcia found out and asked Jaime for some sample cigars and found out that they were called “My Father”. The Garcia’s company now bears the name “My Father Cigars”.

With the Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial line the younger of the Garcia family has a chance to showcase everything he has learned from his father. The Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial Robusto measures 5 ¼ inches x 52 ring gauge. Other size offerings in the line include: the 5 ½ inch x 52 Belicoso, the 4 ½ inch x 50 Petit Robusto, the 6 inch x 54 Toro, and the fatter 6 inch x 60 Toro Gordo. Though there has been some confusion online, the cigar's filler is made from Nicaraguan tobaccos, while the binder is Ecuadorian. The wrapper is Connecticut Broadleaf.

The Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial Robusto wrapper is rich-looking, very dark, and in the sunlight appears quite oily as well. There are no soft spots in the cigar and the foot shows exceptional attention to the filler leaf as would be expected from a master roller. The blue, gold, red, and beige decorative band is attractive and shows off the richness of the cigar.

Smoking the Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial Robusto was pure pleasure from the first draw to the finger burning nub. The cigar burned perfectly even, with concentric razor sharp bands of solid white ash. The draw made cigar smoking a guilty pleasure it was so effortless. The Robusto burned even the entire length with out the need for any touch ups or to be relit. This is one flavor packed cigar. Wood and spice are there at the start layered with notes of chocolate as you move further down the cigar. There is a bit of sweetness and earth notes added in that keeps the smoke interesting. This is a great cigar.
