Odds are most everyone has stumbled across an electronic smokeless cigarette user one place or another by now. More than likely, this person received plenty of stares as the general public is still getting used to the idea of an electronic smokeless cigarette.

Also known as personal vaporizers or electronic nicotine delivery systems, these devices are available as various types, in several styles and from a number of manufacturers.

The three basic components of an electronic smokeless cigarette are the battery, atomizer, and liquid nicotine cartridge
. Some models also include an additional electric circuit that produces a red glow simulating the tip of a conventional, burning tobacco cigarette.

When the user takes a drag on the device’s mouthpiece, the atomizer – which contains a metal wick and a heating element – is activated. The heating element essentially heats the nicotine or flavored solution delivered by the wick and turns it into vapor. As the user draws from the mouthpiece, the vapor is inhaled into the lungs.

The devices can come in several varieties:

  1. One-piece disposables: The battery, atomizer and cartridge are fused together and there are no replaceable parts. Users discard the device once the battery life is exhausted or the nicotine cartridge is depleted, whichever comes first.

  2. Rechargeable two-piece models: Users can keep and recharge the battery many times, replacing only the atomizer/cartridge combo every so often whenever wears out.

  3. Fully exchangeable and customizable tank systems: In this type of personal vaporizer, all three parts are separate, allowing the user the utmost in flexibility to mix and match batteries, atomizers and liquid nicotine reservoir.

The e liquid solution contained in the cartridge or tank is generally composed of water, nicotine, food-grade flavoring and propylene glycol – a substance commonly found as an ingredient in foods, cosmetics, medicine, toothpaste and more.

Personal vaporizers are extremely versatile and customizable. In addition, “vapers” (as e-cig users sometimes like to call themselves) are often able to use these devices in locations where traditional smoking is prohibited, such as restaurants and other public places, due to the purported elimination of harmful second-hand smoke. Nevertheless, airlines are beginning to implement rules for the use of personal vaporizers in aircraft cabins, so it is important to check with the airline prior to “vaping” to avoid possible conflict. Although personal vaporizers have been on the market for several years now, sometimes they still create confusion among an unsuspecting public unfamiliar with the devices.

The nicotine content in so-called e-liquid solutions ranges from zero to low, medium, and high. E-liquids are available in an enormous variety of flavors, everything from traditional tobacco flavor to peach, blueberry, coffee, menthol and hundreds of other combinations.

Although there is no conclusive evidence that would qualify personal vaporizers as smoking cessation devices -- and indeed they cannot legally be marketed as such in the United States -- reviewers often comment on their satisfaction with the nicotine delivery, minus the carcinogens commonly found in traditional tobacco products.

Many reviewers also claim the ongoing expense of using personal vaporizers can be considerably less than the cost of supporting a traditional tobacco habit.
