Fonseca Matasa 30th Anniversary CigarLocated in Santiago, Dominican Republic the MATASA (Manufactura de Tobacos S.A.) factory was opened by Manuel Quesada in 1974. In celebration of this event, Senior Quesada created the Fonseca MATASA 30th Anniversary cigar. Since its arrival on the North American market in 1962, Fonseca has become one of the world's most well known names in cigars. Mr. Quesada has been working in the tobacco industry nearly his entire life. He started in Cuba in his family’s tobacco import/export (called a leaf brokerage) business at the age of 13.

The Fonseca MATASA 30th Anniversary cigar comes in only two sizes. The Perfecto (5 ¾ inches x 54 ring gauge) comes in boxes of 10. The Toro Anniversario (6 ½ inches x 52 ring gauge) comes in boxes of 20. Both sticks carry a Dominican Olor wrapper grown on a micro farm in the Cibao Valley. The Cibao is the main growing region of the Dominican Republic. Olor is a variety of Dominican cigar tobacco, which has large leaves and is commonly used for filler and binder. Olor tobacco can have a distinctly dry taste, or drying effect on the mouth. Olor is also the Spanish word for "Smell". The Fonseca MATASA 30th Anniversary also includes a 1995 Dominican and Nicaraguan Cuban Seed Ligero filler, and Central American binder. Ligero is one of the three basic types of filler leaves of the Criollo tobacco plant: Ligero leaves are from the top of the plant and are exposed to the most sun. Ligero leaves are known for being dense, rich, and robust.

The secret behind the beauty and taste of the Fonseca MATASA 30th Anniversary cigar lies in the wrapper. The wrapper for this cigar was selected from some of the oldest and finest Cuban-seed tobaccos. So select were the Quesada’s in the selection of this leaf, that they could only produce 30,000 cigars, or about a 60 percent yield from the wrapper crop.

Sampling the Anniversario Toro was a privilege. The wrapper is rich and oily – gleaming in the light. The foot showed uniform filler, with no soft spots in the roll along the shaft of the cigar. The stick is topped with a perfect triple cap. My first puffs from the Fonseca MATASA 30th Anniversary will live in my memory – dark, rich cocoa and coffee bean, with chocolate overtones – then it struck me: chocolate pudding. It was wonderful. The smoke is thick and creamy with a complex aroma that makes the cigar smoking experience one to be cherished. Halfway through the cigar a spicier note starts to predominate with pepper coming forth. The flavor was much stronger than the normally mild Fonseca’s I’ve smoked in the past.

Construction was excellent, with a smooth draw and perfect burn. Near the end of the cigar (very near the end) the wrapper started to split and I noticed how amazingly thin it was. What skill it took to roll this cigar.
