Occasionally a noted cigar manufacturer will release a new cigar with little or no fanfare, counting on word of mouth and smoker to smoker interchange to market the new product. The Don Pepin La Reloba has had such a launch. There is nothing more influential than one cigar aficionado sitting up in his chair at a favorite cigar lounge saying “Have you tried the new La Reloba from Pepin Garcia – it’s fantastic.” No matter where cigar smokers gather; the 19th hole of the local course, or the one bar in town that has the ventilation system to allow people to smoke inside; comparisons will always be made and the stick that smokes the best always wins. The staunchest brand loyalty is generated like that - one smoker at a time and lasts a lifetime. Most serious cigar smokers humidors will have a stick made by Don Pepin in their assortment of smokes.

Released in May of 2010 by My Father Cigars (a subsidiary of Don Pepin’s started and run by his son Jaime), the Don Pepin La Reloba cigar is available in four sizes and two different wrappers. This cigar was produced in the Garcia factory in Estelí, Nicaragua: Tabacalera Cubana. Cigars produced in this factory carry the same attention to detail as Pepins factory in Miami: El Rey de los Habanos (The King of the Cuban Cigars) All fermentation and tobacco sorting is done in Nicaragua, and the finishing steps are done in Miami. This Nicaraguan Puro (meaning all Nicaraguan tobacco) has a Sumatra and Habano version and they are available in Corona, (5 5/8 inches by 46 ring gauge) Robusto (5 inches by 50 ring gauge) Toro (6 ¼ inches by 52 ring gauge) and a Torpedo (6 1/8 inches by 52 ring gauge).

The Don Pepin La Reloba Robusto that I tried had an easy appeal to the eye – the Habano version looked like a stick of chocolate with a bright red, gold, and black ring band that easily caught the eye and looked well matched to the Habano wrapper. The weight of the Robusto was substantial without heaviness and had a natural feel in the hand of this smoker.

In every meaning of the word, the Don Pepin La Reloba was perfect when it came to smoking characteristics. The burn was even, no ragged edges of unburned tobacco or spear like pyres of burning ash. The light color ash of the Don Pepin La Reloba was strong, not flaky or so delicate that it would drop off the cigar at the slightest shake. The draw was fluid and effortless. The cigar produced a good amount of smoke with a nice aroma. It never once needed to be relit or to have to touch it up.

Without being overly complex the Don Pepin La Reloba was a delicious smoke, very rich and tasty. Overall it carried a medium body through the entire smoke and the price makes it the perfect everyday cigar. Unheralded or not promoted it might have been - but the enjoyment one gets from this particular smoke makes it a guilty pleasure worth the find.
