Don Pepin Cuban Classic CigarThe Don Pepin Cuban Classic cigar, also known as the “Black Label”, was first released in 2006.  It was one of Don Pepin Garcia’s first lines that were produced in his Estelí, Nicaragua factory.  The Black Label helped establish the reputation for Don Pepin Cigars as strong, full-flavored smokes with a recognizable Pepin “Pepper” that makes them highly prized as after dinner smokes by veteran smokers all over the world.  The Black label is a strong cigar for the strong at heart.

Don Pepin is a master cigar roller and blander.  He learned his trade at some of the best factories in Cuba before emigrating.  Garcia now operates two of the world’s most popular cigar factories in Miami and Nicaragua.  Some of the best quality Cuban-style cigars are produced by his operation.  This gives smokers all of the world access to Cuban quality that would otherwise not be available because of the embargo.   Like the Don Pepín García Blue label and Serie JJ cigar lines, the Don Pepin Cuban Classic by Don Pepin is also Nicaraguan puro using Pepín’s famous Corojo ‘99 wrapper.

The Cuban look of this cigar, provided by its smooth caramel-colored Corojo wrapper and beautiful Cuban-style triple-cap, is the first thing one notice about Don Pepín Cuban Classic cigars. Its usual, solid construction gives it a very nice draw.  An almost sweet aroma arises from the wrap, and a little barnyard from the foot. The simple, yet classics band is very easily removed.  Regardless of whether you use a punch or a cigar cutter on this cigar, proceed carefully. The Corojo wrapper can be slightly fragile. The cigar was a little soft to the touch, but without effect. Some aficionados recommend keeping any cigar that uses a heavy blend of ligero tobacco like this one at a slightly lower humidity.

Pre-light, this cigar has an easy draw that remains good after lighting. Overall, the burn was good.  The ash is light gray and holds on well to about two inches. This cigar puts out a lot of smoke.

Like his other blends, Don Pepín’s Cuban Classic also begins with a burst of pepper that softens into a creamy flavor of toasted cedar and rich coffee with notes of bittersweet cocoa, nuts, and black pepper. The aftertaste and aroma are sweet and pleasant.  A caramel overtone can be savored in the final third.

This cigar definitely has a kick, but it also has a lot of flavor depth and a rather crisp, lingering finish to it as well.  While not as complex as either the Blue or White Label cigars, the flavor of the Cuban Classic is inspired and consistent from beginning to very end.

The Don Pepín Cuban Classic provides a great, full-flavored, medium to full-strength cigar at a price that surely makes it popular in many enthusiasts’ rotations. And, for those who like to pair their smokes with a nip of something good, some folks seem to think the Don Pepín Cuban Classic goes well with a Guiness Stout or a little Patron tequila.
