A Review Of The Asylum Insidious CigarsThe Asylum Insidious cigar is a different kind of stick from the brand known for its crazy ring gauges. The brand, created by Tom Lazuka, recognized a bit of a hole in the Fabricas Unidas portfolio, and this blend is intended to fill it. It was debuted at the 2014 IPCPR Trade Show, and the first thing most aficionados noticed was the sweet cap, a mark that Lazuka focused on specifically. According to Tom, one of the first smokes every blender makes is one with a sweet cap, and so his hope was to celebrate the love of blending with this one.

The Asylum Insidious cigar is made with an Ecuadorian Connecticut, a Honduran binder and fillers from Honduras as well. It’s striking how blonde the wrapper is, and it has a delicate look and feel to it. There are a few small veins and the seams stand out a touch, but it’s about as smooth as glass. The band is vanilla, gold, blue, and red and features the brand’s iconic skull against some rather measured type. Of course, every time the company puts out a new blend, the first question every aficionado has is whether or not it comes in some out there vitolas, and, yes, this one does. Specifically, it is available in a 5 x 50, a 6 x 44, a 6 x 52, a 7 x 48 and an intimidating 7 x 64.

The stick’s cold draw offers up some sweetness, which makes sense with the sweet cap, and a hearty combination of hay and earth. The sweetness is not as powerful as a smoker might imagine given the cap, but it is still the most apparent note. Once the Asylum Insidious cigar is lit up, the initial third, of course, produces an undercurrent of sweetness around which the rest of the profile builds. The other notes in the mix include the deep earth detected on the cold draw, along with some nuts and a sharp twinge of coffee.

In the middle third of the stogie, the profile flips a bit. The most notable change is the drop of sweetness altogether and replacing it with a combination of raisin and maple flavors. The earth flavor is also much fainter and eclipsed by a black pepper note that strengthens the mix and adds heat.

During the last third of the Asylum Insidious cigar, the greatest hits from the first and second third come back, with the earth, maple, and black pepper forming the primary flavors. It’s hot and sweet all the way down to the nub.

With its mild-medium strength and delicate appearance, it’s certainly a departure from what the brand has put out in the past. However, it is executed spot on and gives the company a completely new dimension.
