Tatuaje Classic Cigar Review
According to many reviews, premium cigar imports from Nicaragua to the US have risen by as much as 23 percent since last year. This makes the overall sale of these products in the United States approximately 7 percent.
One line of the cigar lines currently gaining in popularity is the Tatuaje Classic by Don Pepin. The word “tatuaje”, pronounced (tah-to-ah-hey), is Spanish for “tattoo”. The Tatuaje Classic was created by Pete “Tattoo” Johnson. It was especially manufactured for him by master blender, Don Pepin.
The first Tatuajes were released in 2003. The Don Pepin Garcia brand was created by Jose “Pepin” Garcia. It is manufactured at El Rey de los Habanos factory in Miami, Florida, and also at the Tabacalera Cubana factory in Estelí, Nicaragua. The Tatuaje series consists of three ranges of strengths using first Generation Cuban seed grown in Nicaragua, and they are rolled in the classic Cuban tradition.
The Tatuaje Classic wrapper is a Colorado Madurian wrapper made of dark corojo leaf. It is sleek with few veins, however smooth and slight. The overlap is not easily detected. It has the classic Cuban-style triple cap and the foot is even, showing a nice bunch. Characteristic of all Tatuaje cigars, it truly captures the spirit of old Havana.
The Tatuaje Classic is medium to full-bodied in flavor. The foot produces a hint of pepper and cinnamon at first sniff. It is satisfyingly tasteful without being overly complex, despite its rich, earthy and spicy combination of flavors.
Spice dominates the beginning of the smoke, followed by a rich, earthy leather taste taking over throughout the rest of the stick. It has warm cedar undertones accompanied by a long, creamy finish. It is impeccably constructed. The triple cap does not come off with the cut, and the draw is smooth.
This cigar seems to live up to the Tatuaje reputation of great quality and flavor. They are considered to be among the best Nicaraguan cigars available in the market today. Created in the Cuban tradition, Tatuaje Classic cigars lives up in every respect to their description as “Nicaraguan Puros”--from their plain wooden boxes, to their traditional presentation and band design.
The combination of the cigar blends are the result of collaboration between Pete and Pepin Garcia, who have been in the industry for over 40 years. Pepin has been rolling cigars since the age of 12. Pete passes on his desired taste profiles to Pepin, whose also has impeccable expertise when it comes to choosing the most appropriate tobaccos to match his taste profile. Pete samples the prototypes and adds a little of this here, and less of that there, until the perfect blend is reached.
The Tatuaje series are all considered full bodied cigars and can be found in the following brand names: Tatuaje (Brown Label), Tatuaje Havana VI (Red label), Tatuaje Limited Release, Tatuaje Ambos Mundos , and Tatuaje Series P (White label), Tatuaje Black, Tatuaje Cabaiguan, Tatuaje El Triunfador, Tatuaje La Riqueza Cabinet, and the Tatuaje Verocu.
