Camacho Coyolar Cigars
Origin: Honduras Wrapper: Honduran Coyolar
First released in 2005 reportedly under the name, “Say Uncle,” the Camacho Coyolar Puro is the standard-bearer of premium, full-strength cigars. “Puro” merely refers to the fact that the cigar is made “purely” of tobacco from one region, in this case Honduras: wrapper, binder, and filler. Smoking different Puro cigars also help new cigar smokers learn the various flavors, smoke, and aromas of the assorted tobaccos used in cigar blends.
Teeming with a dark, earthy spiciness, the Camacho Coyolar Puro was the cigar that made Christian Eiroa exclaim: “This is one stud of a cigar, man!” The Camacho Coyolar line, grown at the Coyolar farm in Honduras (hence its name) is the first of the Camacho line that is made with tobacco grown outside of the Eiroa family farm at the Rancho Jamastran also in Honduras.
At first glance, this cigar is innocuous enough—a medium brown wrapper consistent with the Honduran Coyolar wrapper encircled by an unpretentious band. Pre-light, the aroma of cacao, wood, and pungent spices is there from the first appreciative whiff.
As one would expect from a Camacho blend, the light-up is easy; the burn is classic and razor sharp, while the ash is solid with no signs of flakiness. The Camacho Coyolar Puro has the free flowing draw which is also characteristic of a Camacho smoke.
Handmade of the potent all-Honduran grown long-filler tobaccos, the Camacho Coyolar Puro begins with the pleasant flavors of wood, spice, and a rich coffee; its potency is evident from that first peppery burst of smoke. The dominant notes of wood and leather are added with a creamy nuttiness as it gains in body. Though it crescendos and fades in a growing symphony of full-bodied flavor, the strength of the Camacho Coyolar, sometimes expressed by smokers as pepperiness, is evident from the start, right along with its characteristic smoothness. Near the midway point, the sweeter and cedar-tinged notes become more evident. Though the peppery kick remains, its waxing and waning keep things interestingly potent rather than overwhelming. The finale of unsweetened espresso builds while the aroma remains sweet, with a pleasant flavor throughout.
An impressive cigar with a near-perfect burn, lots of flavor, and some kick to it the Camacho Coyolar Puro is no sissy cigar. It is a strong full-bodied premium smoke for the mature palate. What it is not, however, is a strong cigar marred by raw nicotine or under-cured tobacco, often characterized by an unpleasant iodine flavor or the stomach-searing aroma of kerosene which leaves the unfortunate smoker with a cigar hangover. Some neophytes with untutored palates have had unfortunate responses to the full-bodied strength of the Camacho Coyolar and have mistaken characterized it as such, though.
Although it is strong and full, it is an expected strength with a smooth nuttiness that makes for a relaxing smoke. Some days it takes a macho blend like the Camacho Coyolar Puro to make you sit back and relax. So long as the power of this industry standard isn’t too much for your palate, it is an excellent complement to a good meal for anyone who enjoys a full-bodied cigar. If you like the woodiness of a strong-bodied yet smooth cigar, or enjoy the Corojo line, the Camacho Coyolar deserves your respect and should definitely be in your repertoire.
