La Flor Dominicana Casa de Tobacos Cigars – The Details are in the Wrapper

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

One reviewer said that he was skeptical about the La Flor Dominicana Casa de Tobacos Air Bender Maduro because he feared that all of the hype about the box was present to overshadow a rather bland offering inside.  However, he was completely astounded to find out that the cigar that he found inside was fresh and full of flavor.  He went on to say that something of this quality definitely deserved this type of introduction, and that the replica of the tobacco storage barn was completely appropriate.  He went on to give the cigar a huge rating of a ninety four.

The reason there is so much interest in the La Flor Dominicana Casa de Tobacos is because of the wrapper that is used.  The company has never before used a Brazilian tobacco product as a wrapper, so this was a unique and a much anticipated variance to the way things have been done in the past.  Of course, once connoisseurs taste the intense profile that the La Flor Dominicana Casa de Tobacos Air Bender Maduro has to offer, they are definitely assured that this is something that is above the bar for the industry.

Many interviews with the Gomez family that owns the farm where this fine cigar is produced have proven that they are very serious about making a very classy product that can be enjoyed by cigar smoking novices and experienced aficionados.  The family takes great pride in their La Flor Dominicana Casa de Tobacos cigars, and they want to make sure that they continue to acquire new customers, as well as impress those that have enjoyed their previous offerings.

La Flor Dominicana Colorado Oscuro Series Provides Premium Smokes

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

La Flor Dominicana Colorado Oscuro Series CigarsThe La Flor Dominicana Colorado Oscuro series was a met with unabashed enthusiasm at its debut in the IPCPR trade show in early 2011. Litto Gomez and his brand La Flor Dominicana were hailed for the addition of this line. He has once again proven his natural ability in cigar production.

Following much hardship in the jewelry business, Gomez found his true calling in the cigar industry in the Dominican Republic. The La Flor Dominicana Colorado Oscuro series is a superb example of the experience and knowledge he has gained over the years.

It is constructed of an Ecuadorian Ligero Sumatra tobacco that is available on a limited basis, resulting in a bi-annual release for these amazing cigars.  The binder is a delightful Dominican Sumatra tobacco, while the filler is a wonderful blend of both Nicaraguan and Dominican leaves. The La Flor Dominican Colorado Oscuro series is available in four distinct sizes, the #2, #3, #4, and #5 and each comes in an affordable box of 50.

The #5 in particular is said to be a premium cigar worth experiencing. The exterior has been described as having an oily surface with minimal veins. It is firmly packed and feels solid in the hand. Once easily lit this smoke has an easy draw with flavors of pepper and leather coming through right from the start. Metallic hints are said to begin to be introduced, as are notes of cinnamon and nature around the midpoint. The spiciness decreases at this stage, yet it is said to return with more strength in the final third accompanied by hints of pepper, sweet sugar, and additional cinnamon.

Reviewers agree that the La Flor Dominicana Colorado Oscuro series is a slow smoke sure to be found in humidors everywhere, whether they belong to beginners or more experienced cigar connoisseurs. Available at establishments that have cigars for sale.

La Gloria Cubana Artesanos de Tabaqueros

Sunday, December 5th, 2010

Origin: Dominican Republic                                                           Binder: Dominican & Honduran
Wrapper: Connecticut Shade & Ecuadoran Sumatra                     Strength: Medium to Full
Filler: Dominican & Honduran proprietary blends

La Gloria Cubana Artesanos De TabaquerosThe La Gloria Cubana Artesanos de Tabaqueros is a medium to full-bodied smoke that combines the best of both worlds. By selecting an elite team of 18 highly skilled artisans to handcraft each of these cigars, the status of these sticks quickly rises by the minute. In addition, the smoker will appreciate the talent needed to construct one of these cigars after setting fire and smoking the first one.

Appearance: Tightly rolled in both Connecticut Shade and Ecuadorian Sumatra wrappers, La Gloria Cubana Artesanos de Tabaqueros cigars are a sight to see because they are the only complex cigars to have two wrappers that do not overlap at any point in the cigar. In addition to this visible boundary, the band of the cigar is placed at the point in which the wrappers switch their balance of power.

Flavor: Because most of the flavors come from the wrappers, there are two distinct flavor profiles. The Connecticut Shade wrapper introduces a subtle pepper flavor that is soon complemented by a full spice burst that quickly becomes a creamy and smooth treat. About an hour in, the power exchange occurs and allows the Sumatra wrapper to take control. This wrapper rules with an iron fist and quickly becomes a fuller and richer smoke.

Burn: As with every aspect of the cigar, the burn makes no exceptions in the case of superior burn qualities. These cigars hold a medium to long ash that is firm, and could easily be described as perfection.

Recommendation: Overall, these cigars will most likely add a few hairs on the chests of those that are seeking a powerful cigar with complex qualities. From the exceptional artistry in creating such elaborate rods to the amazing flavor profiles, these sticks deserve to be recognized with the best.

La Flor Dominicana Coronado

Thursday, November 4th, 2010
Cigar: La Flor Dominicana Coronado Origin: Dominican Republic
Wrapper: Nicaraguan Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic Strength:Full

History: La Flor Dominicana Coronado cigars have set the bar high when it comes to manufacturing a quality cigar that packs a serious punch.  The La Flor Dominicana Coronado cigars were the very first line of cigars introduced by La Flor Dominicana in 2006.  They quickly earned their place among top cigars and were named the number two cigar of the year by Cigar Aficionado within that same year.  The Coronado line are full-bodied smokes that deserve to be enjoyed over an extended period of time in order to take in the complexity of flavors and aromas they offer.

Appearance: Just as these cigars are considered among many aficionados as La Flor royalty, it is only fitting that they sport an embossed gold and purple band with a crown to symbolize their status.  Upon further admiration, one will notice the brawny, sun-grown wrapper from Nicaragua with a rustic leathery and mildly oily guise.  This cigar wrapper gives hints as to the powerful blend of Dominican tobaccos as well as the Dominican Corojo binder.

Flavor and Aroma: This stick offers a plethora of flavors and aromas from the first spark and maintains throughout.  Before lighting the foot, hints of licorice seek from within.  However, once lit, notes of earth, coffee and leather appear in conjunction with grass and hay undertones topped off with spicy pepper notes with lasting effects and a long finish.  Toffee, warm tobacco, and paprika also add to the complexity.

Recommendation: This cigar would be best enjoyed over several hours.

La Flor Dominicana Cigar

Cigar: La Flor Dominicana Cigar Origin:
Wrapper: Corojo and Sumatra Binder:
Filler: Strength:
Flavor:

History: The story of La Flor Dominicana cigars starts with one of tragedy and ends with a birth of a boutique brand that keeps flourishing through the 21st century.  Its founder, Litto Gomez, has been hailed as being one of the most innovative minds ever to grace the cigar world.  Litto’s industrious ability to turn tragedy into triumph is a story worth noting and reflecting upon when smoking a La Flor Dominicana cigar.
Although being born in the Dominican Republic, Litto and his wife Ines lived in Miami where Litto worked his trade as a jeweler.  One day he was robbed at gun point where he subsequently lost almost half a million dollars worth of jewels.  After such a devastating blow, Litto decided to pack up and move back to his country where he purchased a 120 acre tobacco farm to grow tobacco for his personal use.  From there Litto set out to learn everything he possibly could about the cigar business.  But unlike some who chose to copy from newcomers like himself, Litto chose to dig in and meticulously learn from the wisest in the business.  This approach has earned him admiration and respect in the industry, and has given Litto the knowledge required to make an exceptionally special cigar.
La Flor Dominicana cigars were originally named Los Libertadores.  When talking to Gomez, he will tell you how it took him 15 to 20 years of refining his cigar making process and how this long and diligent quest for perfection has brought the brand to where it is today.  The name “La Flor” was inspired by the flower that grows on the tobacco plant when the growing process is complete and the plant is ready for production.  And Litto takes his time with production.  Process and control are meticulously detailed.  Litto’s insistence on quality can be seen every step of the way from growth to smoke.  Take the protocols in his fields for example.  Each and every single one million of his tobacco plants are cleaned of suckers that grow between the leaves and stems 4 times a day prior to harvesting.  The field workers also remove the flower from each plant after flowering to ensure that the leaves develop fully.  Litto’s original focus was on binder and filler tobacco until 2002, when he purchased a 40 acre farm dedicated to growing Corojo and Sumatra Shade grown tobacco for wrappers.
La Flor Dominicana cigars have definitely benefited from Litto Gomez’ attention to detail, and because of the extra measures taken to insure quality, their production is limited.  In fact, you cannot buy LFD in just any cigar shop.  Gomez also has certain restrictions as to who can actually sell his product.  He leans towards the traditional brick and mortar shops that are small enough to build strong relationships with their clientele.  He is particular in the placement of his brand and how they are to be displayed and it is not unusual to find him visiting his retailers on a regular basis.  You would think after such limitations, this quest for excellence would drive up prices but this is not the case with LFD.  You do not have to spend a fortune on a La Flor Dominicana cigar like some boutique brands on the market; you just have to enjoy smoking hand-rolled perfection.

La Flor Dominicana Carajos: Short in Length; Long on Flavor

Friday, October 8th, 2010
Cigar: La Flor Dominicana Carajos Oscuro Origin: Dominican Republic
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Sumatra Sun Grown Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic Strength: Full

HistoryLa Flor Dominicana Carajos were released in 2008 as a new size in the LFD Cabinet Oscuro Natural Series by Litto Gomez.  At just 4 inches in length, these babies have attitude.  La Flor Dominicana Carajos have been appropriately described as “flavor bombs,” having an abundant amount of spicy flavor packed in one tiny cigarillo. There is a cigar for every mood and every palate created by the cigar world’s own Molly Brown, Litto Gomez who founded La Flor Dominicana.  This one in particular is spot on if you want a strong, spicy hit of flavor in a short 30 minute smoke.

Appearance: The Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper is characteristically rich, dark, and oily and smells great right out of its handsome, Spanish cedar flip-top box.

Draw/Burn/Ash: The construction is good, with a nice draw that produces a decent amount of smoke.  The burn is a bit uneven, but it never gets hot, even with frequent puffing.  It is easy to light and the ash stays strong.

Flavor: You get a good hit of spice through the nose with heavy earthy tastes upon lighting.  Flavors of coffee and spice are present throughout the smoke, with a predominately milky cinnamon and vanilla taste.  Toward the end, that first burst of spice shows back up, but with more of a polite arrival than the beginning, pushing the silk-like vanilla flavors to the background.

Recommendation:
This is a great smoke that packs a powerful punch.  Another great Gomez creation, these hot little cigars are definitely worth stocking in your humidor. When you really want a cigar smoking break, but don’t have time for a full-sized cigar, La Flor Dominicana Carajos is the perfect answer. La Flor Dominicana – Ligero

Monday, September 27th, 2010
Cigar: La Flor Dominicana – Ligero 400 Origin: Dominican Republic
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Sumatra Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic Strength: Full
Flavor: Full

History: First-generation tobacconists, Litto Gomez and his wife, Ines Lorenzo-Gomez, released their first full-bodied offerings with their La Flor Dominicana Ligero cigars. The sunned and well-nourished ligero leaves near the top of the tobacco plant lend their name to this renowned cigar line. When combined with a proprietary method of trabajando (working) applied to the mature ligero tobacco leaves, these leaves acquire their dark Oscuro coloring and robust, pepper-spiced flavor.

Though there are three different styles of the full-bodied ligero cigars offered by the Gomez’s La Flor Dominicana—Ligero, Cabinet Ligero, and what may be the strongest, fullest-flavored cigars on the market, the Double Ligero–par for the course for the La Flor Dominicana company which was started by a man who wouldn’t say die. Representing this legendary line of cigars for the purposes of introduction is the Ligero 400.

Appearance: Composed of Dominican filler and binder leaf grown on the Gomez farms, the Ligero 400 is wrapped in a smooth Ecuadorian Sumatra leaf with a Cuban-style flat cap. The aroma, similar to Corojo, is evocative of a sweet cedar and roasted almonds. The wrapper spices up the Ligero blend and is delightfully balanced by the Dominican filler—preventing the cigar from becoming too potent for enjoyment.

Draw/Burn/Ash: From beginning to end, the draw is perfect–firm, but easy. Effortlessly even is the burn of this fine cigar which exudes a remarkably creamy smoke with a peppery aftertaste. The Ligero is a well-constructed cigar that smolders to a pure white ash.

Flavor: A burst of predominantly spice and pepper flavor with sweet undertones heralds the character of this potent cigar. Halfway through the second the onslaught of a sharp pepperiness is renewed after which the flavors take on a creamy smoothness, though this cigar never relinquishes its complex spectrum of tastes.

Recommendation: A strong and full-flavored cigar, La Flor Dominicana Ligero is a favorite of cigar lovers who appreciate the rich, creamy, full-bodied spiciness for which the Ligero is justifiably famous. These cigars are best enjoyed after a filling meal by those with excitement-craving mature palates—and are NOT recommended for most beginners. Get your favorite La Flor Domincana cigars today from our convenient and economical online cigar shop!

La Flor Dominicana Air Bender

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010
Cigar: La Flor Dominicana Air Bender Vitola (Size): Maestro (5.5″ X 52)
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Habano Binder: Dominican
Filler: Dominican  (Piloto Cubano, Sumatra seed & Corojo) Strength: Full
Flavor: Full

History: Air Bender cigars, named by Litto Gomez for the powerful ancient warriors who “bend the air” in classic Kung Fu movies, include vitolas named after an ancient warrior or a character in one of these powerhouse movies.

Appearance: The Air Bender, encased in an Ecuadorian Habano cigar wrapper, has a moderately oily medium to dark brown wrapper. Solid and densely packed, the Air Bender has a nice heft to it with no soft spots. A montage of tobacco shades color the foot even as a barely visible straight line running from cap to foot is a vestige of the tobaccos having been in the press.

Draw/Burn/Ash: In spite of its dense, tight packing, this cigar has a remarkably perfect draw from light to finish.  The excellent burn sometimes requires only a minor touch-up.

Flavor: From the very first draw after lighting, the Air Bender declares its primordial power with an earthiness usually apparent much later in full-strength cigars. The flavors include the zest of black pepper in the back of the throat, some roasted nuts and caramel flavors, and a note of “dry” leather also apparent.

From its powerful beginning, the Air Bender mellows into a medium to full-strength cigar in the second third. The spice fades a bit as the strong earthiness of tobacco remains.  The modulated flavors make a jubilant comeback even as they flow back into the caramelized sweetness and leather exhibited earlier.

Recommendation: The Air Bender is a solid and stalwart cigar which is NOT for the novice, the occasional smoker, nor one who prefers a mild cigar with a gourmet meal and fine wine. The ligero tobacco is paramount in this cigar, making the Air Bender a staple for the cigar smoking aficionado who lives on the wild side and craves a full-strength, full-flavored cigar.
